I wrote this song after planting a tree that had nearly died. It had been sitting out quite late in the season and while the rest of the tray had been in reach of the irrigator, this one wasn't so lucky. I took it home, planted it and tended to it and within several weeks it manage to recover and grow some fresh green shoots. The comparisons to a biblical restoration and the gardener metaphor were obvious.

A dry plant on the tray's edge
Just missed beyond the irrigator
Small plant drying in the wind
Clinging to life limb and leaf

Then found by the gardener
and salvaged from the tray
planted down into a patch of good soil
and tended to throughout the day

Oh- Second chance, salvage me
Good soil, living water, mighty tree
Oh- Second chance, restore me
Arms out, roots deep, mighty tree

Through time growing stronger
forming a copse of righteous trees
Scars of the past displayed proudly
with noble crowns toward the sun

And still the gardener brings the small plants
beneath the wings of canopy
the mighty stand of salvaged trees
Restore them as an ancient city
