In the course of my work I get to spend time in some very old stands of remnant bush. These areas have somehow managed to survive the human development all around them. Hopefully they continue to do so but they require every protection and intervention we can muster. This song mulls over the stresses facing an old stand. Hopefully it also hints at the reflections of ourselves and our actions. Are we more like the ancient indigenous stand with room for all, or the rabid consumer filling itself only for today?

One small stand in a sea of weeds
the browser has every fresh new seed
A remnant of the ancient stands
An old set, in a new land

Holding small ground with every new season
The vicious vines tearing away at the edge
Invaders unable to move as community
growing for themselves alone.

One by one in their silent lines
Poor semblance of canopy smothered in vines
a stand of trees, all of one type
they fill all this ground using all of this light

But up the road a long way off
At the foot of a crook of a hill
A remnant stand, indigenous
many different colours a forgotten land

A thousand different beings, each with it's own
A thousand different spaces to each one it's own
layers and colours, giants and small
A throng of life in a hum one for all.

Is there room, for many,
in the space, given to one?
